The Volgograd aluminium smelter is situated near ports on the Volga River and the Volga-Don shipping canal. It is also connected to the federal railway network, which makes it easy for the smelter to deliver its products to customers in the western part of Russia.

The smelter delivered its first products in 1959. In September 2013, the facility shifted its focus from producing primary aluminium to remelting solid metal supplied from other smelters. VgAZ has launched the production of cylindrical ingots with a diameter of 127 mm and lengths ranging from 500 to 2,000 mm. The smelter has launched a project to make pre-baked anode blocks, with a capacity of 104 ktpy to supply the Company's facilities with the necessary materials. Additionally, a new section for manufacturing sacrificial aluminium anodes has been commissioned.

The smelter has undertaken a major environmental upgrade. All production floors have been equipped with advanced gas treatment equipment that operates at an efficiency of over 98%. Furthermore, the transition to Green Soderberg technology is nearing completion in the potrooms that have recently resumed operation.
