Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world. It was established in 1964 as part of a regional power generating and smelting complex. The project included facilities for the entire process of aluminium production—from primary metal to products for end users as well as power generation plants.
KrAZ is one of the Group's foremost aluminium smelters. It utilises innovative technologies and makes unique products. More than 40% of the smelter's output is in value-added products.
The smelter comprises 24 potrooms and three casthouses. They use up the bulk of the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power plant's capacity. In 2024, KrAZ purchased 76.3% of its electricity directly from Krasnoyarsk HPP and Irkutskenergo under a free contract.
Over the past decade, KrAZ has been engaged in a major environmental re-equipment programme aimed at significantly reducing emissions of pollutants. The smelter has switched to a dry anode technology and is equipped with dry gas treatment systems and automatic alumina feeders. All the pots at the Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter have been converted to meet the Green Soderberg environmental standard.
In 2023, a project to renovate the Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter was launched. This project will involve building two new, state-of-the-art potrooms. They will replace the eleven that were built in the Soviet era, with a similar capacity of about 500,000 metric tonnes of aluminium to be produced per year. The new equipment will help reduce fluoride emissions by two-thirds and completely eliminate benz(a)pyrene emissions.
